Most job applications get no response at all, and many good candidates never follow up. A short, polite follow-up is normal and professional. It often moves your application back to the top of someone's inbox. Here's exactly when and how to do it.
When to follow up
- After applying: wait about 5 business days.
- After an interview: send a thank-you within 24 hours, then follow up if you haven't heard back by the date they gave you, or after about a week.
- After a cold message: wait 5 business days, then follow up once more a week later at most.
Who to send it to
If you have a recruiter's or hiring manager's email, use it. If not, find the likely hiring manager on LinkedIn and send a short message. Avoid emailing several people at the same company at once.

Template: the final follow-up
Hi [Name], I know things get busy, so this is my last note on this. If the [Role] position is filled, no problem at all. I'd love to be considered for future openings. Thanks for your time.
What not to do
- Don't follow up more than twice after an application.
- Don't guilt-trip ("I haven't heard anything...").
- Don't send the same message to five people at the company.
- Don't call repeatedly unless they invited phone contact.
Track it
A simple tracker with company, contact, date sent, follow-up 1, follow-up 2 and status keeps you consistent. It also shows you which approaches get replies, so you can do more of what works.
