How to Write a Remote-Ready Resume (With a Summary Template)

Remote roles often attract hundreds of applicants, and many are filtered by software before a person reads anything. A remote-ready resume has one job: prove in a few seconds that you can do this specific work without someone looking over your shoulder. Here's how to build one.

1. Start with a clear header

Include your name, email, LinkedIn URL, and city with time zone. For remote roles, add your working-hours overlap, for example "Available 9am to 3pm US Eastern." That one line answers a question every remote hiring manager has.

2. Write a 3-line summary

Skip "hard-working team player." Say what you do, for whom, and one result.

3. Add a skills block with real keywords

Open 10 postings for your target role and note the skills that appear again and again. Those are your keywords. Add the ones you genuinely have, using the same words the postings use. Applicant tracking systems and recruiters both scan for them.

4. Turn duties into results

Use this formula for every bullet: action verb + what you did + how + result.

  • Before: "Responsible for customer emails."
  • After: "Answered 60+ customer emails a day with a 95% same-day response rate using Gorgias macros."

No exact numbers? Use honest estimates of volume, frequency, time saved or people supported. Never invent figures, because you'll need to explain them in an interview.

5. Show you can work remotely

Hiring managers worry about communication and self-management. Prove both:

  • Mention remote or hybrid roles you've held.
  • List the tools you use daily: Slack, Notion, Asana, Google Workspace, Zoom, Shopify and so on.
  • Include a bullet about written communication, documentation or working across time zones.

6. Keep the format simple

  • One column, standard fonts, clear headings.
  • No photos, graphics, text boxes or complex tables that parsing software can't read.
  • One page with under 10 years of experience, two pages maximum.
  • Save as PDF named FirstName-LastName-Role.pdf.

7. Tailor it in 10 minutes

Keep a master resume with everything. For each application, swap in the posting's top five keywords, move the most relevant bullets to the top, and adjust the last line of your summary to mention the company's problem. Ten minutes of tailoring beats fifty generic applications.
